my doctor gave me temazepam to help me sleep and it didn't work. i called the pharmacy and asked if over the counter sleeping pills were ok to take tonight and he said it's fine. they are 50mg diphenhydrmine hydrochloride liquicaps. the directions say to take one, but i already know one won't work. how many mg can you take without overdosing? i am desperate to sleep before 3am for once.

First I would ask you how long you have tried to let it work. It's not a magic pill and if you try to stay awake after you take it you will.

If you took your temazepam, went to bed in a dark room (no reading - waiting for 'sleep to come' etc), closed your eyes tried to breathe deeply for 20 to 30 minutes and relax ~~

If you did all that and it didn't work then you might try the OTC sleep aids (they are basically just strong antihistamines). Start with the 1. On top of the temazepam it should be plenty!!

If you are staying up watching t.v. or reading or making a chore list or taking a shower etc. etc. after you take these pills it won't matter, you can push through them. Take the pill and then go lay down and relax - it takes some discipline, but if you really want it you have to let your body do it - it won't happen instantly.

Hope that helps! I am an insomniac, currently on halcion (triazolam). I've taken temazepam, it can work if you let it.

i have alot of trouble sleeping too. and prescription sleeping pills make me feel so sick the next day! so...i take 2 tylenol pms every nite and also...i take a hot bath EVERY nite before i go to bed. it helps me relax and i literally cannot sleep if i dont take that bath.
i have recently been told that taking benedryl was actually safer than tylenol pm...but i havnt tried it yet.
melatonin seems to work too...its natural and mild. you should take it about 3 hours before you want to sleep.the 5 mg dose would probably be good for you to try.

sweet dreams!
