From Monty Brown to Marquis Cor Von?

Monty Brown debuted on 1-16 episode of ECW. But his ring name was changed to Marquis Cor Von. From Mike Johnson's Hotline on PWinsider.com The reason for the Monty Brown name change was Vince McMahon. He wanted to own the rights to the name. Dave Lagana (the head booker of ECW) argued that it would hurt his debut if they gave him a new name. Since fans are familar with his name and they wouldn't be able to use all the football footage they have of him. But Vince didn't want to hear any of it so that was that. The head booker of Raw tried to get Monty for his show but Vince chose to let Dave have him. Current plants are to build Monty up as an opponent for Bobby Lashely. They are supposed to change the name of the pounce ( which is interesting because pounce is on his tights).

What does this tell you about Mcmahon?

McMahon is selfish. but Lashley v Monty Brown would be awesome to see.

It tells me that either Vince has already alienated Brown to the point that he will become disenchanted with his current standing or Vince and the creative staff have already come up with a way to get Brown over and also have a gimmick to go along with Brown's new name.

Given Vince and creative's current state of mind with most of WWE's talent, I'd say Brown becomes frustrated and gets buried at the bottom of thecard.

To be honest, I'm neutral on this. As a business move it makes sense to want to have the rights to his name, but I could see trying to capitalize on his wrestling and football past. As for the actual name they chose, I think they could've done better.
