I had a few friends on Depo. I would suggest not to do it. (I am surprised they still even give the "shot") Some of them didn't even get thier periods anymore which may be a good thing to most women. But, when they came off of the shot, all complained of bad cramping, nausea, and they all didn't get their menstrual cycle back until a year or more later. 3 of my friends on Depo wanted a baby and that's why they stopped the shot. But they didn't get pregnant until a few years later. It is your choice, but I would not recommend it. More risks then benefits. Good Luck!

All methods of hormonal birth control (including the Pill, the "patch," Depo-Provera shots, etc.) work in three ways:

1. By attempting to prevent ovulation (the release of an egg)
2. By thickening cervical mucus, which may prevent sperm from reaching the egg
3. By changing the lining of the womb to prevent a newly conceived human being from implanting in the womb, causing his or her death at 5-9 days old.

The IUD also works by preventing the newly conceived child from implanting in the womb.

Some claim that hormonal birth control only "prevents pregnancy," but this is only because there has been a move to change the definition of the beginning of pregnancy from fertilization to implantation. This is scientifically dishonest. Medical textbooks recognize that life begins at fertilization:

Just as a anecdotal note, I had a friend who received only one shot and said that it "messed up" her body for a year.

ooh thats still on the market? you will either not have periods at all or you will bleed for 6 months straight like i did, it's kinda scary stuff. If you're interested in it because you wont have to remember taking something daily there is the alternative Nuvaring that you put in for 3 weeks take it out for a week and put another one in for 3 weeks etc. You could always try the depo shot but i dont know anyone that has liked it at all.

Well the shot, is like any other contraceptive.....not 100% effective and also creates the same side effects like the pill, patch and so on. Some women gain weight, so loose it. It all depends on your body and how it reacts to it. Sometimes like pills, you become irritable and emotional. Some women dont get their period but like 3-4 times a day (it's not bad, it's normal) some women actually like that part of it. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor so they can give you a run down on specific side effects and risks and maybe consider what's the best contraceptive method for you.

The "shot" is Depo Provera, it is a hormorne similar to the ones in birth control pills. It stops ovulation for three months at a time preventing you from getting pregnant. I didn't have a period for the entire three months which was nice but after I stopped getting them it took FOREVER for my periods to regulate again!! I would not use it again but lots of women love it! Remember, like the pill it only prevents pregnancy....NOT STD'S!!!
