This is absolutely true -- I saw something very strange yesterday. Standing in a grassy knoll, thousands of seagulls were flocked closely together. But what was strange was most of them were standing still and facing the same direction! It was like they were all watching a concert or something. Can anyone explain this?

Seagulls stand facing into the wind. They do this for two reasons. Firstly the wind blowing from head to tail doesn't ruffle their feathers and secondly if they need to take to the air quickly they are in the best position to do so.

All standing in a grassy knoll. Sound suspicious. It could be a assassination plot. You might want to notify the Warren commission. By the way, did you verify whether there actually was a concert or not?

Seriously, I'm not a bird person. But my guess would be that they were just birds.. birds of a feather do what? ... Flock together. ;)

Sorry if this was highly uninformative. Just excercising my keyboard.. good luck with the answers!

Feathers... yes thats right, its because of their feathers. Each one has to be in the right position and "zipped up" in order to function during flight. Birds take alot of time preening their feathers, a difficult and time consuming process, and one that must ensure each feather is properly groomed and placed in order to be used for flight. Facing away from the wind ruffles and displaces the feathers causing extra work for the bird before it can take off again... facing into the wind prevents the feathers from being displaced and therefore saves the birds alot of effort and can save their lives if they have to take off suddenly to avoid predators without having to stop and preen first. Also flight is most easily achieved when facing into the wind rather than facing away from it... so birds in their infinite experience with flight and the feathers that make it possible.. face into the wind whenever possible to ensure their feathers stay in place and they are ready for take-off in case of emergency.

PS It may interest you to know that there is no such bird called a "seagull" it is a laymans term and has no taxonomic meaning. There are many different species of Gull and the majority dwell inland and never even see the sea.. so calling them all seagulls is an erroneous label at best. If you wish to learn more about Gulls I suggest starting here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gull

Most animals or psychic.Maybe they were all attuned to something.

what I like to do is feed them from a tall building throwing them food and watching them catch it in the air.they are something else to watch.

I was living in the Ocala forest for months on a lake in my camper. and noticed that they all have a certain time to do everything, those critters are amazing.

Peace

That is not unusual although you may have never really noticed it before-- they face the wind- it keeps their feathers from blowing backwards- and for flight. It must've been pretty windy to catch your attention to them.
