Doctor of Osteopathy They attend osteopathic medical school, which is somewhat more of a holistic approach to medicine. M.D.'s (Doctor of Medicine) attend allopathic medical school. In terms of credentials, there is little difference. Osteopathic physicians are qualified to enter any medical specialty, however, they tend to go into primary care. When I was doing a year of surgery training, I perfomed some surgical cases in the OR, and found that many of the anesthesiology residents were D.O.'s. I'd be interested in seeing how many D.O.'s get in to surgical specialties. Probably there is some stigma against D.O.'s, especially when it comes to the most competitive specialties.

You can also see other combinations:
FACS - Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
FACC - Fellow of the American College of Cardiology
FACOG - Fellow of the American College of Gynecology

There is another abbreviation for each of the board recognized specialties. It can turn into real alphabet soup, sometimes, especially for those with multiple board certifications.
