Foreigners tend to call americans yanks but in the U.S. "yankees" are the people from the New England area.

Short for yankee... Someone who is from above the Mason Dixon line to someone from the south of it... Someone from New Jersey is a "Yank" to a redneck from Georgia... Also means an American to someone from the UK...
