how do you determend square foot

Not only do you not seem to understand basic arithmetic but you cant spell either.
Surely this stuff gets taught at school! I cant understand why you would want to come to a site like this and publicly display your lack of a basic education.

To determine a square foot, measure a length 1 foot long and 1 foot wide. That's a square foot. A square foot contains or 12 x 12 or 144 square inches, since there are 12 inches in a linear foot.

a square foot is just length times width in this case 12 times 12
