The institution of marrage in the west is on the decline, or so it would seem to many. Less people are getting married. Those that do marry are devorcing more often. More couples are living together without the benifit of marrage. There are those who would expand the very definition of marrage to the point it losses all its meaning.

So in other words, If marrage were to cese to exist which gender would have the most to lose?

What do you think?

It seems as though women prefer not to marry anymore. They have their careers, they invest their money in real estate at an early age, they also own their own vehicles. They like to be able to pack up and travel with friends. They're enjoying their freedom and its okay to be single now in this day and age. You're not considered an old maid like way back then.If marriage were to cease to exist I think that man wouldn't be able to pass on their family name to their future children. That's if its important to a man to continue with the tradition.I guess that would depend on the individual.

The reason less people want to get married is people dont want to commit or have any obligations. I think people put up with less these days. Soon as something goes wrong they split up or divorce. Thats why De facto relationships have become popular. It gives an easy escape, like a try before you buy thing.
I think that both genders lose out even if we feel we have not.
For instance in countries with stronger religion or non multicultural societies, divorce rates are less.
I personally beleive that if people had better communication and didnt give up as easy in a relationship, marriages would work out!

I don't think its a matter of who has the most to lose. as you say couples live together now and have children and do everything that married couples are doing. I think its a matter of both parties getting what they need out of a relationship and when that fails then both are suffereing or one person needs are not being met and then there is a breakdown in the foundation.

So no one benefits or wins when this happens.

Men. Statistics prove that after a breakup, women can function longer being independent. Men usually find someone else within a short period of time. They don't like to be alone. Also, men have a harder time dealing with divorce and death of a spouse/mate.

I think it is equal... You make marriage and of marriage what you want it to be.... I think both men and women should get the equal feelings or how you say benefits of marriage.... 50/50 you know. I feel the both sexes would have alot to lose if marriage ceased to exist.

Of course women. Men get only sex and love.

Women get sex, love and financial support (and may be protection)
