This is a tricky question. Careers are becoming more and more knowledged-based. So if income is your concern, the best way to look at the best career is in terms of what is the market for what you can do, not what is the best market in general. This is because any type of knowledge is becoming commoditized. It's not enough to say "doctor", but what does this particular person offer as a distinguished doctor. It's not enough to say "lawyer", but what does this particular person offer as a distinguished lawyer. The key is to specialize, and the only way to specialize is to be better than everyone else in one very specialized thing. I have a friend who is a wine salesman and earns over 100K, but most only earn 20K. Because he's the best at what HE does.

A good salesman will make over 80k, it all depends on what market you are in. I am making in the 40's as a computer programmer but if I had the same job in a big city I would probably be making 80's. But then again my house costs one third the price vs big city. It's all relative.
