There is no such thing as an in vitro pregnancy test. In vitro is a method of fertilizing an egg outside of the woman's body, and then selecting one or two embryos to be put back inside her, where they hopefully implant.

Women who go through in vitro fertilization are watched pretty carefully, and often have their pregnancies confirmed very early on through blood tests.

But anyone can go to a doctor's office and request a blood test for pregnancy. It's just more expensive, and since urine tests work pretty darn well for most women, they're the standard of care.

Both tests look for the presence of HCG--human chorionic gonadotropin--which is normally present in the body only during pregnancy.

They're the same thing. Home pregnancy tests are called "in vitro tests."
