He was a smart guy from ancient Greece. He wrote a book called "De Rerum Natura", which translates to "The Nature of Things".

In it he amazingly wrote about the nature of matter, including the concept that you could divide things into smaller and smaller pieces until you couldn't divide it more without changing the fundamental nature of the substance.

This concept was almost prescient, given that he had no way of understanding the micromicro nature of matter. He basically was the first predictor of what we now know as atomic theory.

Democritus was a Greek philosopher (born around 460 BC), and co-originator of the belief that all matter is made up of various imperishable, indivisible elements which he called "atomos", from which we get the word atom. He acquired fame with his knowledge of natural phenomena and his ability to predict changes in the weather. He used this ability to make people believe that he could predict the future.
His interests included astronomy, math and general philosophy.
He said : 'The man enslaved to wealth can never be honest.'
