I'm unhappy at my present job (its a corporate-type office job) and I have decided to leave it for a better opportunity elsewhere. However, I'm not so sure that I'm completely comfortable with everyone at my present job knowing where I'm going to be working next. Is it okay if I submit a standard two week notice and be done with it? What can I say if people ask where I'm going (i.e. "I'm not allowed to discuss my new employer until I start working there"...?)

It makes it tough, because I also don't want to sound rude or weird if people ask me where I'm going and I tell them that I can't talk about it... any thoughts?

Hmm... this is an awkward situation. I guess in your letter you could say something along the lines of: " I have not yet made up my mind about any particular employers and after my last day here, I look forward to having some time to take care of personal matters." That way you won't be lying. You aren't saying that you haven't accepted any offers and no one needs to know how much of a gap there will be between the two jobs.

I agree with the other people who said you shouldn't have to say anything, but as you know, that's not how it works. People are going to be asking questions and it is going to get weird. Just be super helpful in your present job and act as if you're looking forward to working on your "personal matters".

Just tell them you are going back to school. Or if you want to tell mostly the truth just give them a standard two week notice like you said. Tell them when your last day will be and that's it. They do not need to know where you are going. Telling them isn't a requirement. Before you go steal lots of office supplies and sell them on Ebay.

Well try to keep the fact that you are putting in your two weeks on the hush until you leave. It is none of their business where you are going next!

No there is no need to do this. Thank them for the opportunity and do not burn any bridges as the old saying goes, you might want to go back.

This happened to me last year. It's no one's business but your pwn. Just tell them you are debating over two offers and will reveal after you've made a decision.

You don't have to tell them jack. That's all you need to know. How you handle it is up to you.
