okay, you need more than just a water dish if you want to make sure of hydration. First of all, you do need a water dish. It should be one large enough for the python to crawl into and soak in. Secondly, you should also be checking the humidity level. These gauges are pretty cheap in a pet store, usually under 5 dollars. This will help you check the humidity and keep it at a proper level. I have a red tailed boa and every morning I mist the cage with a water bottle and then do it again in the evening. If I have his heat lamp on durring the day, I check the gauge and sometimes give him an extra misting to keep the humidity level between 60 and 80 percent. This is very important especially durring sheds. Having it too dry can cause shedding problems and dehydration, having it too wet can cause health problems too. Sometimes my boa will soak for a day or more. Many times this happens right before he sheds. I am looking at buying two ball pythons from someone who is wanting to sell them. They make great pets and I hope you have alot of fun with yours.

It should be free choice.
Let him decide when and how long.
Get a large, non-tip, non-slip dog bowl. A small cat litter pan might be better for when he gets to be an adult. Rubbermaid containers work great, they come in many sizes and are super cheap.
Keep it filled and clean. Check it twice a day. The large surface area will keep humidity up and the lamps and heaters will keep the water the right temperature for him.
Good luck

You need to leave a water dish in it's cage 24/7 and make sure it's got CLEAN water in it every day.

you should have a basin of water for your python to bath in. It knows better then we do when it needs to soak. All constricters sould have some type of water to soak in.
