1st thing you do, since its f(g(x)), that means you get g(x) first, in which case it is given to you
g(x) = x+3
now you find f(g(x)) - which in other words mean f(x+3) --> that means you replace the x's with (x+3)
so now your f(x) equation looks like this:
f(x) = (x+3)^2-1
foil out the (x+3)'s so it equals x^2+6x+9, seriously...you can do that in your head =.=
now you have to minus 1! don't forget
your final equation should be
f(x)=x^2+6x+8 ----> unbelievably, it is factorable into (x+4) and (x+2)
equate both factors to 0 and your final answer should be
x = -4, -2

sorry to say - disregard "monkeychi..." and her answer, its the first one, she obviously does not know how to square a WHOLE TERM....can you believe she actually distributed the ^2....=.=

plug in g(x) for x in f(x)

f(g(x)) = (g(x))^2 - 1
= (x + 3)^2 -1
expand and simplify:
= x^2 +6x +9 -1
= x^2 + 6x + 8

f(x)= x^2-1

g(x)= x+3

So, f(g(x)) = f(x+3)

= f(x)+3f

= x^2-1+3(x^2-1)/x

=x^2-1+3x^2-3/x

=x^2+3x^2-1-3/x

=4x^2-4/x

=4x-4

=4(x-1)
