I don't consider buttons on par with cars and electricity, technologically. What's the reason behind this?

Actually, their shirts have buttons, just not their jackets. They wear plain clothes to illustrate humility and separation from the world.

Amish people as you might know are very thrifty people . They use what they need to get bye . Why would you buy or try to make a button when you can make a tie or strap out of the scrap fabric you used to make the article of clothing . Waste not want not . This is just a thought . I'm not amish !!!

The restriction on buttons is attributed in part to their association with military uniforms, and also to their potential for serving as opportunities for vain display. The Amish anti-individualist orientation is the motive for rejecting labor-saving technologies that might make one less dependent on community; or which, like electricity, might start a competition for status-goods; or which, like photographs, might cultivate individual or family vanity. It is also the proximate cause for rejecting education beyond the eighth grade, especially speculative study that has little practical use for farm life but may awaken personal and materialistic ambitions.

The Amish consider them to be worldly, so much so that they say that buttons give Satan a convenient place on which to hang things.

Well, I'm not Amish, but I live in Amish-ville. Not really, but I do live by tons of Amish and know them well. They think buttons are "prideful". They are not supposed to be.
