Its almost as if your suppossed to be happy in any situation, no matter what happens. I think its ridiculous. I've been so depressed that I slept for a month. When I got up my legs hurt to move. I think more people should read Brave New World, If you don't fit neatly into there perfect society, drug them. Its B.S. My point is if you have higher standards for yourself, and your life doesn't live up to them, of course your going to be depressed. So is the answer to lower your standards? I think its up to you. In my case, I say, you can take my life, but I will never lower my standards. If I have to live with depression so be it. But til the day I die, I will never be molded to fit somebody elses design. I will never take drugs to be happy with a lesser life. I must send out a WARNING to other depressed people, not to follow my advice, unless your believe strongly that one day true to yourself is better than a lifetime of false drugged happiness.

In short, because many (if not most) people are selfish....they expect you to "put yourself in your place" almost as if you are either born gifted or expected to drug and/or cure yourself. Calling you depressed and encouraging you take drugs is a "nice/easy/guiltless way" in their minds to say "do anything, but stay away from us superior people, we have better things to do".

I agree completely with your relating depression to the ostrasizing society of "Brave New World". People with high standards, or who "over-think reality" are often made fun of...let's face it philosophers aren't known for "getting some" nowadays...and "getting some" is known as a high standard for ranking success, as is fame.

For the record, I have had clinical depression at once point for nearly 5 months and tried medication for two and it didn't help (it temporarily gave me more physical energy, which my mind used to rekindle my depression enough to bring the energy back down).

There is no such thing as a complete medical cure for depression...but there is a cure for people who, in selfishness, are too proud to even take a second to befriend someone who is depressed, instead of just shoving pills in their faces and thinking they must be "getting their deserved punishment for being weak people".

Yes, I know, this is not "polite talk", but it is the truth and people need to know....societies trying to remove themselves from guilt of ostrasizing and/or damaging people results in things like Nazi Germany where people's futures are taken from them in areas where common people can't see their pain or feel guilt for their destruction (death camps, in the Nazi example). This "guilt relief" people engage in is, therefore, extremely dangerous innuendo and something people should consider not lying to themselves about and dealing with instead (by consciously refusing to support the destruction and ostracizing).

I really like how you put this. I feel the same way. I am in no way against people who take anti-depressants. I mean hey if it makes you feel better and you are taking them for yourself great. I don't think getting help makes you weak either but the thought of being conformed by society disturbs me.

I like your thinking. Whenever I get depressed everyone is just like, "You should take antidepressants." It's not like I don't do anything important when it comes up (like I get a chance to make things better) or act sad all the time, ít's just a part of me is always a little disappointed inside and I'm like, "Why do I have to accept my problems when so many other people can have tons of friends and take it for granted?"

On the other hand it can be hard to get what I want when I have to force myself not to cry.
