Any answer to this question is entirely based on how you manage the cold. Here are some facts:

1. The city is almost always warmer than the surrounding countryside. Buildings help warm the air.

2. BUT sunshine often doesn't reach the street level on cross-town streets because of the high buildings, and the canyons formed by the buildings can funnel wind on breezy days, turning them into ersatz wind tunnels.

3. Most of your time in New York is spent indoors, and if you are willing to stay on Manhattan, you will be rewarded by relatively short walks to the subway. Cabs are plentiful. Restaurants and theaters are near one another.

4. In winter, the city's garbage doesn't smell nearly so bad. Keep in mind that I adore NYC, but in the summer, it's not unusual to get an occasional whiff of rotting food. In the winter, such smells are less pronounced, if present at all.

5. The TKTS booth is now under cover at the Times Square Marriott, so you will not have to wait in the chill on Times Square for 1/2 tickets.

I've spent many a February weekend in NYC, and never regretted a moment of it. If you are prone never to go out in temperatures lower than 32 deg. F., then you might get a bit chilly, but if you are willing to take a scarf, hat and gloves (or purchase them there....what fun!), I think you'll have a blast.

February is the coldest month in NY. However it has been in the 50s and 60s until today. (30s) burrr. If Feb. is normal it will be cold. If you dress properly its no problem. Hats, gloves scarf , atleast a 3/4 length jacket and a sweater you could layer under if need be. Am I wrong to think you mean NYC and not upstate. NY is a big state and weather varies.
Upstate is a whole other thing it is very cold in Feb. and snowy.
You will have fun and NYC is just not to be messed with in the summer. Go skating at Rockefeller Center and have a hot chocolate ;Something you can not do in summer. Or if you like your chocolate cold find a restaurant that serves a frozen hot chocolate. Its a real treat. NYC if that is where you are going is never dull. Upstate and the Hudson River Valley is beautiful as is eastern LI. Oh one last word Double Socks!!!

Depends on how tough your constitution is (and how great your winter clothing is). NYC has been warm this winter for the most part (like a California winter surprisingly!). However, this week winter finally hit. It was all of 29 degrees today- and windy! Brrr! I was okay because I had a down coat on- however, my friends I went to lunch with were hurting a bit more. If you are from a warm locale, and don't want to lug winter clothing on a vacation with you- wait a couple of months. Spring is glorious in NYC. NYC is a great city for walking, strolling the museums, dining, walking to these places- and of course, Central Park. If you could hold out a bit longer for the spring you will probably enjoy it more. However, I agree with the person who said- NY is great any time really. :-) and who knows- you might have a warm spurt then (in Feb.) as we have been having much of the season. Enjoy!

No. It has actually been really warm here this winter!! The weather has been crappy for the last couple of days but it's supposed to clear up soon. There is fun stuff to do in NY all year round!

Not at all! You could go to good restaurants and go see a broadway show. You could ice skate in Central Park, or at Rockefella Center. There are a lot of museums, also!

Probably. Especially if you plan to go upstate at all, and/or if you're not into any winter sports.
