Be his friend, take him out to some of your family gathering. Allow him to be accepted and know what it feels like to have a family. Take him to lunch, dinner. Find out some of the things he like to do, and take time out and do some things with him. Find out his history, his high school friends things of that nature, and try to find out if some of his friends are around and give him a friend Reunion. Just a thought. Overall just give him a true, friendship, and he will appreciate that.

A persons loneliness can be directly attributed to being isolated from others. Get him active with people his own age. Find him things within the community that interests him such as clubs, etc. If he doesnt get a daily newspaper consider paying for a subscription for him so he can read articles and do crosswords. If you have the time maybe go for a walk with him on a certain day at a certain time once a week. Local parks and flower gardens are a great idea. Feed the ducks, go nuts.

Spending some time with him. Talking about the old days when things were not so hectic as they are now. Maybe cooking him a good homemade meal. Playing some cards and board games with him.
At that age, (my dad is almost 80)- They love to talk about the old times, playing cards. A hobby for him would also be something to do together....The elderly feel lonely, as you stated, and just having someone visiting them and talking would make him smile.

If he likes to talk, just be there to listen. Be his friend.
Visit him from time to time, don't tire him out, but don't be a stranger, either.
Maybe he'd like to have books on tape (audio books), or maybe you could read to him.
