I think it's a really stupid and pointless idea. However much time and money is being spent on that could be better spent on, um, anything else. There is no way to predict the end of civilization without us being right on the brink. They might as well reset it to the beginning, then point it to zero hour once the mushroom clouds are a-risin'. We either exist, or don't. No in-between.

Because it is believed when the clock stricks 12.00 inthe doomsday clock, the world will end.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clockface maintained since 1947 by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. It uses the analogy of the human race being at a time that is "minutes to midnight" where midnight represents destruction by nuclear war. The clock has appeared on the cover of each issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists since its introduction.

The number of minutes before midnight, an arbitrary measure of the degree of nuclear threat, is updated periodically. The clock is currently set to five minutes to midnight, the most recent time adjustment having been made on January 17, 2007.-

Sigh. We don't have to be worried about the doomsday clock. It's kind of like a ruler or a teaspoon -- just a measuring device, and it isn't even as accurate because the "measurements" depend on what a group of scientists think.

What we *do* have to be worried about, though, is nuclear arms getting into the hands of unstable governments and terrorists. The doomsday clock is supposed to provoke us to *think* about this, and what we can do. Frex: conserve energy so that profits from oil dollars don't wind up in terrorist hands. I'm not sure *what* we can do about North Korea, though.

How do you get people to do what you want? Scare the sh*t out of them. How do you think people get power . . . they use scare tactics. This country has never been so scared, and our fearless psudoleader is doing a great job to keep that level of fear high.

Watch the news here, then watch, let's say, the BBC. The temperament is completely different. Look at the whole WMD BS. How do you convince a country to go to war??? Scare them into thinking that big bad Sadam has a nuke head pointed at your house.

The doomsday clock is just one more thing . . . let's post a giant sized copy of revelations next to it along with doomsdayers interpretations of it . . . hell, aren't we already dead?

Because the people who can't tell time want us to pay attention to their little puppet show. Forgetting it's the eggheads like them who got us into that mess in the first place. They let the nuclear genii out of the bottle and want us to be their obliging servants trembling in fear and awe because of it. I forget the guy's name, but he warned Einstein, that Einstein had no right to be lecturing God not to play dice with the universe. It's a wonder Al Gore wasn't there for teh camera time, but then he'd probably get mad and rip the face off the doomsday clock if they disagreed with him about where the hands should be set. Then we'd find out what defensive weaponry Hawkens has added to his chair. NOW THAT would have made it worth watching.
