Emma, the second most common name in the US in 2005 has it's roots in the French, Italian and English languages. In all languages, it means universal or whole.

Isabelle, less common (though closely related to 2005's #6 name Isabella) has it's roots in Germanic, French and English languages and means consecrated to God.

Personally, I've always preferred Isabelle as I've thought Izzy and Belle or Bella would be great nicknames, the latter meaning beautiful in several languages.

I think with either you run the risk of having a child who is forever stuck adding their last initial to their name in school, because both are extremely trendy (both in the top 10 in the most commonly used list for the last year) and there is bound to be another little girl of the same age with that name in a class one day soon.

They're both fine, pretty and all of that, but not original in the least.
