Gnomes are wee forest people of folklore. They aren't real. The idea of gnomes is cross cultural and they're refered to by many different names. Basically, gnomes of folklore will do favours for good people like clean their homes, or steal children from bad people and replace them with baby gnomes (changelings). They are sometimes mischevious, sometimes downright evil, and sometimes very good natured, depending on the myth and the culture.

Gnomes are no more or less real than fairies, dragons, unicorns, Santa Clause, Angels, or the Buddha. If you believe, you don't need convincing. If you don't believe, nothing will convince you anyway. Gnomes like to beat up on trolls. And it's trolls that are bad, very bad. Gnomes will tease, but they cannot lie. Gnomes have been around for longer than people have. Today, they try to be politically correct and call themselves dwarves. They aren't alone in that aspect though. Leprechauns today are called midgets. Not all midgets are leprechauns, and not all dwarves are gnomes. It's up to you to tell the difference. They are all magical people, though they never work magic in public.
