The pony express was a system of delivering mail using horses. There were relay stations every 20 or so miles apart. It ran from St. Joseph, Mo. to Sacramento, Cal. It was started in 1860 and discontinued in 1861 due to the invention of the telegraph. It lasted just 18 months.

Pony Express existed for a couple of years. It was used to transport mail, not deliver mail like a postman. Each rider would carry the mail about 100 miles. The rider would change horses 8 to 10 times in that distance.
