I have a system of smoke detectors throughout my house - one detector per room. They seem to be all sync'd with one another. Every 45 seconds to 2 minutes, the detector downstairs will beep one time. I reset them once (or thought I did anyway) but it still beeps. Why is this?

One of them has a dead battery. They are all hooked into the same electrical system as the house, however each individual detector has a separate back-up battery. One of those batteries is dead. When it signals that the battery is dead all of the alarms alert.. The best thing to do is replace all the back-up batteries.

To find the bad battery you have to remove the detector from the house wiring by twist ing it to the right to release it. Then remove the two wire connector that hooks it to the system. If it continues beeping without being hooked into the system then that is the bad battery or the one causing the problem. You can take the battery out to stop the beeping and then don't hook it back into the system, but you will loose the fire protection in that room until it is replaced. The rest of the system will continue to operate as normal,
.

Change all of the batteries anyway just to be safe. You need to do this twice a year.

I did the following to resolve this problem: 1) Take down all the smoke detectors. If you have a CO monitor also hard wired, take it down as well. 2) For each detector, open the battery compartment so that there is no power to the detector. Hold down the test button until all beeping stops to drain the capacitor. The detectors usually have a capacitor that holds some charge even after disconnected from power and battery. 3) Close the battery compartment so that the detector is running on battery alone. If it starts to chirp, repeat with a new battery. If it chirps with a new, good battery, try blowing dust out of the detector and repeating. If it still chirps, get a new detector. 4) Once all detectors are working on battery power, connect them to power one by one. If the detector starts to chirp, then try a different detector in that location. If both chirp you probably have a wiring problem or connector issue at that location. If one chirps but the other does not, you probably have a wiring or connector problem on the chirping detector. I hope this helps. Most of this came from First Alert customer support. They were very helpful.

When a smoke detector beep constantly, it is time to change the batteries. Mine beeped until I changed the battery. It doesn't make a sound now.

I was going to tell you that one or more of them needed new batteries, but after I clicked on "Answer Question" and read all the previous 13 answers, let me just say, you've got the correct answer 14 times now. I have smoke detectors all through my house, and we learned it by experience too. I think Swordfish_13's got the best answer when he says to read the manual they came with. My wife and I were slow to do that too, but it sure helped when we did. Dumb Dave also has a great answer. Your choice. God Bless you.

Usually a beeping smoke detector means the batteries are dying.

Read the manual that came with it.

Check the batteries, usually they beep that way because the battery need to be change. Remove the cover and you'll find the battery, change it, and it should stop beeping

They'll beep if they're battery operated, and the battery is dying. It's to let you know it's time to change the battery. If it's an electrical system, then I don't know.

Do they run on a/c or battery?

If it's battery, try replacing the battery.
