Especially shows like "sweet 16"..
Do you think people from other countries watch these and further reinforce views that Americans are "fat, lazy, stupid, spoiled, etc"..?
I see a lot of answers on Y/A that accuse Americans of these traits. Just wondering if they gain an opinion about us mainly by television..
BTW- I also realize that "American Idol" or "idol" does it's show all over the world but I've never seen any other countries version. I'd think that they could watch ours..

The fact that these shows rate so well in the US is a sad indictment on society. A lot of young people are watching them and using these people as role models. We have our own, pathetic and stupid version here in Australia, as well as yours from the US - pity us.
I don't think that it changes the opinions that overseas people have of Americans. The war in Iraq is the determining factor at the moment. I think the fact that GWB was re-elected is evidence enough that US citizens are not good at foresight.
The opinion of Americans as fat and lazy has been around for years, ever since data came out showing that your citizens are, in fact, the most obese in the western world, closely followed by the British and Australians. You become obese, in the most part, by being lazy and eating too much of the wrong food.
Hope this helps.

Not just America. It's funny you mention "Sweet 16" because I saw it for the first time on MTV (I'm Australian) and I was appalled, but also found it funny that such horrible girls thought they were so incredible.
Anyway no, it's not a reflection on America - any country that films these stupid "reality" television shows runs the risk of having these idiots tarnish their reputation. The fact is, these shows attract a certain type of mentality and the characters on them are not indicative of that society as a whole (thank god).
I have seen BB whilst in England, Holland and Australia and every one of them had the same boring selection of 'personalities' with all the contestants claiming to be "party animals" and "totally out there". It's so boring, they don't realise they're just reflecting everyone else and the viewing public can see how transparent they are and how staged the show is.

The media has always had a strong influence on how one perceive about the country and its people..i have not been to the states yet but i'm pretty sure not everyone is what the media portrays to be.
on the other note: okay american idol is a good show. but i donoe if the american viewers would ever be interested in other countries "idol" show .. i mean some of them sing in their own language. .(smaller market mabye?)
watching sweet 16 i really feel like strangling all of the girls/boys there.. really those kids are so spoiled. the idea screaming at my parents if i dont get what i want never came across my mind..
wheres the respect?? *shakes head*

Chunga, i'm nonetheless grappling with the image of a majority of those avatars being superimposed over the faces of the persons. might the fact of The Lives onscreen shrink the enter online? i might watch a talk board of 5 to eight regulars discussing R&P and perchance taking calls. shop that techniques working; that's a sturdy element.

well Simon is from England so what does that say about the temperament of English people. Simon Cowell started this show because they have an equivalent in England so why accuse americans of being weird it appears people are weird everywhere.

I think our political leaders are making us look bad. American Idol is a young person show. I heard the US referred to yesterday as Imperialist. That's political, Haven't heard anyone one calling us happy singing country. The word Idol though may have a bad connotation to religious fanatics.... similar to paganism maybe. At least to me.
