It is a measurment unit of area , as everyone explained above.

I would like to explain the significance of this term square feet.
while measuring area we express terms such as square km for expressing large area such as geographical area of a country or a region .For area of small space say area of building or a property that you buy would be expressed in squqre feets(1 sq feet=12 inches * 12 inches).for small area if you go for expressing in terms of meter you might loose some significant values or make an approximation (say 1.434 sq mts)and wheras if you go for lower units the no of significant values or too large (say 2345675 sq cms).Hence we do go for a reasonable unit that is square feet where even approximating the non significant value( decimal) leads to only an error max of 450 sq cms (may be + or - from the actual value) which is least signifixcant when considering area of a building or a plot.

A square foot is a square, and each side is one foot long, creating a "square" foot. Same as a square yard, where each side is a yard long.

1 feet= 12 inches
