Greed is caused by the inability to control desire, or lust, or envy. Greed is caused by thinking that having the most makes you the best. Greed is caused by thinking that your fair share is all of it. Greed is the philosophy that enough, isn't enough, and that more than enough is a good start. Greed is the mistaken belief that he who dies with the most, wins.

I think it's Darwinian. At a more primitive time, greedy humans probably had more comfortable lives and fostered more children, passing along their "greed gene". Darwin never hesitated to say that evolution has no sense of morality - the species retains whatever traits that best allow it to propagate.

greed is basically caused by the insatiable desire to achieve a seemingly perfect state of living. as in some instances that desire controls people, there is a tendency for people to never feel contentment.

jealousy may also take it's toll on a person and encourage a person to take part in greed to better his/her state of living. either way, as the ideal state of living is not a definite standard, that person would not really be content and continue pursuing improvement out of greed.

the desire the influences greed gives forth the reaction to external factors (motivation). as a person may be tempted to elevate himself/herself, s/he may try to achieve his/her goal the easy way by exploiting the presence of external factors (e.g. money, power, etc.). however, unconsciously, the temptation manipulates the person to pursue the unquenchable desire that leads to the seemingly continuous cycle of greed.

Animals are greedy, because the more they eat, the more likely they'll survive to pass on their genetic information.

Since humans come from animals, we have the same tendencies towards survival. It's pretty clear that more money and material possessions means you'll live easier and probably have kids.

Somewhat outdated.
