For starters, I'm a fan of anime and manga and like to make flash animations in my spare time because it is my hobby. My parents think it is dumb and I should do something else. Should I just give up on all the things I like to make my parents happy?

NO!

Never give up! Anime is awesome. Anime is life. Only the Otaku can understand this!

It doesn't matter what they think. Whether it's a hobby, or you plan on making it into a career... Whatever you do with it, that's your choice. It's your life. Don't give in for them. Just because they don't understand something, doesn't make them right.

Please don't give up on your interests, hobbies, or anything you want to do. Anime is wonderful. Indulge. Live. Thrive. Love. And do so without fear of what others think.

You asked a similar question before did you not? Well I have to say, pursue your interests no matter what they may be. After all, it is your life. Your parents can guide you to some extent, but this decision is your own. So stick with manga and anime. Look how much money this industry makes in Japan. And flash animations takes a lot of talent. you can say you might be interested in computer programming or something.

I have the same problem with my parents. They hate that I listen to anime music that is in Japanese and anime/manga in general so I know how you feel but to answer your question. Hell no!!! You shouldn't give up what you like to do to make them happy. You should do what makes you happy unless it involves other things... You should explain to your parents that it is something that makes you happy and it doesn't have any sort of bad influence (well maybe in some but not most) on you. Also say it's better than watching MTV, BET, or VH1 and doing what most teenagers do nowadays (not to stereotype or anything) and that some anime can be very informative on human nature and has historical background in some of them. (Trinity Blood, Ghost In the Shell, Inuyasha, and many others). In short DON'T GIVE UP WHAT YOU LOVE!

I completely understand what you're going through. My mom thought I had dropped a bombshell on her when I told her I want to go to college to be an animator. Some parents can't get over the fact that you're old enough to make your own decision and that it's essential as a maturing process to MAKE YOUR OWN MISTAKES.

I say sit down with your parents and tell them that you understand their concerns, but make sure they understand that this is a hobby and it's also something that you have high interest in. Also show them what you have been doing and throw in some references on a VCD (if you have a CD burner on your comp). If you approach them in a "professional manner', they'd have no choice but to recognize you (unless you have the parents that see you as 8 yrs old no matter what. Then I'd suggest moving out).

You are suppose to obey your parents, but this rule takes a back seat when it comes to pausing your growth as a human being and a viable member of your community.

No, it's your hobby and you only have interest in that so dont change your hobby just to pleased someone. Maybe you can explain to your parents that anime is not just a cartoon that watched by kids, some adults watch anime too.

You mentioned your parents said it's dumb, but you don't mentioned your parents said to just give up on all the things.

Anyway. Do comply with your parents' wish for you to focus on something else, since it's not good to be too focused on just one thing.

How old are you? My mother has no interest in my hobbies at all. She does her own stuff and I do mine. Do some reseach into your hobbie so that next time they give you grief, you can give them facts and supporting ideals and theories. Show them it's not rubbish.

Its just for entertainment purposes. I find it way better than hanging out with a bunch of kids who just want to get wasted.

Have you read gantz, its the best. The manga anyway.
