Never cleans coins. Sixty or Seventy years ago it was accepted in coin collecting circles but today a coin is down graded in value if is cleaned. If the coins are high value coins there are professional conserving services that will clean a coin without damaging its value. If they are common date items leave them alone.

There are cleaning solvents but unless you know what you are doing you risk damaging the coin. These cleaners can be bought at most coin shops.

I think the best way to clean coins is to use lemon juice. Just squeeze a lemon and put the juice into a cup *don't use the cup anymore* and put the coin in and in a while, take the coin out and wipe it off with a paper towel. The dirt will come right off. =]

I asked this question a while back and got a lot of good answers. But, the crux of the matter is that you shouldn't clean old coins because it destroys the value.
