If it is a FREE express upgrade it is definately free. In many cases you have to pay for it but it means you will be able to have it just as soon as anyone. If the computer comes with XP Home Vista is almost always a pay upgrade. If Media Center, Professional, or Tablet most of the time it's free. I work at Wal-Mart and have to deal with this question a lot.

It means they will either mail you a copy for free or at a discounted price. They will give you a upgrade, so you will need your original computer's xp disc.

Most of the time it is free, but you must check where you purchased it from.

Why don't you ask the company you bought the machine from?
My guess is that your machine is Vista ready, but you're going to need to buy it if you want it.
