For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain. The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. This individual soul can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable, and eternally the same. It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable, and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

The body is actually the only thing of a human which can die, the person's soul is eternal and lives forever. With every life the human's soul lives it grows a personality but when the body dies the person's soul leaves the body to search throughout time for another body. The soul doesn't remember anything about the past life like who he was or how his personality was because he starts all over again when he is born again. If you don't live a life that God doesn't approve of when you're here on earth, he'll bring you back over and over until you get it right. This earth is a world of chaos, corruption, etc.; and that's why God made it hell which is why you live over and over. There is life after death but it depends on if you've lived a life God will approve of, only then will God will meet with his elite team of angels and your spiritual overseer (who watches over your entire life) will they decide if you should be amongst them or live again in hell (earth). If he decides to approve you to be amongst him and his angels, he'll give you a different body fit for a different planet and a different plan in the afterlife.

The body is an organic vehicle into which your consciousness lies. Call it your soul if you wish or higher self, spirit. Being organic the body rots, basically it starts to rot not long after birth. All that money on health food and gymnasiums to keep it from dying!
The mind (not the brain), consciousness is retained after death. It is alot of work to put consciousness where you don't have consciousness. Eg, try to remember everything you did while you were asleep. That's the same state as death, only at death you don't come back. Interesting isn't it?

Your body just gives out, but your soul keeps living, but the Budda believe that when you die you wake from a dream. Life is nothing but a dream. I've been trying to grasp that concept for about 10 or 11 years, I keep wondering if this is a dream, why is there so much pain?

no one has come back to give us the answer to that one, and if things were that good on the other side they would rush to get back to tell us not to worry over death.
