Am teaching my children through distance education - just had them tested and after only 3 months they are a year ahead of where they last were - they still have daily contact with other kids but feel isolated sometimes - is it worth the education to sacrifice their social lives? They haven't complained I was just wondering

Since you care about socialization, I'd still home school. Just involve them in after school activities such as sports or scouts or something like that.

I don't think the choice btw academics and socialization becomes a real issue until high school. At a regular high school, they have a clear way of proving themselves in order to get into the top colleges. Plus, social interaction at school functions such as dances or athletic events are a great experience for them. They can stay advanced by taking courses at a local community college or you can just tutor them. If they're that advanced, they'll get straight A's in high school so all you have to worry about is them scoring well on the SAT/ACT.

If safety at the high school level is an issue, then I'd home school.

There are other ways to catch up on social lives, like sports perhaps. School is supposed to be for studying mostly, not so much for social lives.

I hated school's "social" life. Most of my quality social life was outsite of school anyway. I had nothing in common with those brats who tortured the teachers and didn't want education.

If they are having an excellent education, that's really good!! There are other ways for social contact. If they join an extracurricular activity, like the soccer team, they will have the chance to make friends.

You really want to avoid your children from becoming anti-social, some daily activity with other children will alleviate any serious issues in the future. Even sports or any type of recreation would be perfect.

I am all for it. In my opinion, public schools are getting worse these days. If I had kids, I would either homeschool them or send them to a private school. To me, I just can't deal with the public schools.

Get them into sports, scouts, music organizations, church groups, whatever. Education and social life don't need to have anything to do with eachother!

As a homeschooler myself, I suggest that you homeschool your kids throughout elementary school, and maybe partway through middle school. DON'T homeschool them through highschool, it's produced nothing but problems for me.
