Where did American Idol get its Judges?

DId the producers of American Idol have try outs for judges?And how did they get such a good variety? just wondering

It is a Simon Cowall production. American Idol is like a show he has in England and he brought it to America. He picked the Judges.

simon was a judge on pop idol so he just moved over
