Nope, no pay. You are still enrolled at your college or university, so actually, you're paying tuition for the privilege of this apprenticeship.
Some places will let you sub for your cooperating teacher if/when he/she is out. I did this while student teaching. My coop went to a conference and I got paid for two days, which was great 'cause I had to be there anyway! It varies by district, though. I currently have a student teacher and she is not allowed to sub for me for pay.
Length of student teaching placements varies by state and by your college/university's requirement. In our area, they're 12 weeks.

It is true that you don't get paid. Not only do you not get paid, but you have to pay the university for your student teaching class and whatever other classes you are taking at the time. It lasts several weeks, taking up most of a semester.

it is usually around 5-8 months for elementary, and there is NO money involved at all. Since you're getting college credit for it, you are more than likely actually going to have to pay to teach those kids.

I am in a two-year B.Ed program (all students in this program have a prior degree in their subject area). We student-teach two days per week for the first two semesters (year one) and every day for our third semster. We pay regular university fees for the duration of the program, including the time in which we're student teaching full-time. I spend (on average) about $50 per semester on extra supplies to use in class.

You don't get paid for student teaching. You actually pay tuition to your university. It took me awhile to wrap my head around that one.
My student teaching placements were 8 weeks each.
