I'm doing this to settle an arguement with my fiance. I'm looking to switch companies. He is absolutely convinced that I can ask for $60K and actually get $50K. Right now I'm making $33K. I think I should ask for at most 50 and maybe get 45. So what would be realistic?

I live in Jersey. I have a BS in Natural Resource Management and I'm looking for a job as an environmental scientist. My job entails field work outdoors, research, and reports.

It really depends on the companies. You are not telling us enough to really help you. What type of work, it what state do you live in? What are the companies?? How long have you been doing that for? Your educational background?? Give us something here!

Sorry but my friend does the samething that you do, but he is looking to get out of it because of the horrible pay. He says even his supervisor only makes 50K. Also that it tops out around that. If your fiance makes more money and you just have that job to keep you busy and because you like it that that is fine.

Just so you know a company already has the position and salary in mind. So it really doesnt matter what you "ask" for, they will give you an offer and you can either take it or not. If you dont take it there are 100 people behind you that will.

I did it when I finished my degree. A combination of experience and the degree greatly increased my earning potential. I think it also depends on the industry - I'm an accountant in an up and coming industry.

It depends on the company but I actually got more than I asked for... I would say ask for 60.
