New York and southern Ontario. They were easily the most powerful tribe east of the Mississippi when Europeans arived, and were feared by tribes as far away as Michigan's upper penninsula and far western Illinois for their ferocity, they were widely known for their torture methods, and powerful military.

The Six Nations of the Iroquois people, (known as the Iroquois Confederacy) included the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and Tuscarora tribes.

They reach from southern Canada to the southern shores of Lake Ontario, and all of present day New York State.
