Just relax and don't worry about every little thing that comes out of your mouth. Don't try to hard. Conversation should come natural.

People aren't really expecting a set response when they talk to you, they just want a conversation. It's not so much not knowing how to respond I think but more not knowing how to respond with the right thing. Well, honey, there is no right thing. Just say what's on your mind. What you think of what they were talking about. Because whether you say it or not, you always have some sort of personal opinion or response in your head after what someone says to you. Just use it.

It doesn't matter what you think they might think of it, all that will happen is they'll just continue the conversation from that. People aren't really that scary. Just...don't feel too scared to speak your mind. It opens up a whole new world. I promise.

It sounds crazy, but you should spend more time with a variety of people. You'll get to see how they all interact and how they respond to eachother and you'll eventually just get comfortable in social situations. I know how it feels, I'm learning how to deal with cultural differences in social settings. I'm just throwing myself into the mix even though it goes quiet when I talk sometimes, I just keep on going. You can't be cool & suave all the time!

Try making a "call" with your cellphone , then excuse yourself while you engage in the "conversation".
Or if you do not want to appear anti-social , then try talking about current events and then suffer all the way until you choose the former answer .

The choice is yours.

I feel like that all the time! I try and ask the other person questions about themselves or their interests. It breaks the ice and leads to other topics to talk about.
