There are bigots everywhere, but it may be that you are an outsider and have not yet developed the trust of the people surrounding you. You can not control any ones attitude except your own. So ultimately it's going to fall on your shoulders to prove yourself. Right now you are an outsider and unfortunately your accent makes that all too apparent. Eventually people around you will come to know you for yourself. I moved from the north to the deep south and my accent was also very apparent and it took me several months to fit in, but eventually I became trusted and built bonds to a wonderful group of people that will last a lifetime.

I'm sure it's the few people you've come into contact with that discriminate against you based on your accent. It's not an NYC thing or anywhere for that matter. People can be ignorant anywhere you go but it's never accurate to identify an entire neighborhood or region for the beliefs of very few.
