i am exeperiencing the EXACT same problem as you are!

if youre saving money and you really want the laptop, id suggest letting go of the ipod for a while until after you purchase the laptop.

if your ipod is new, you should be able to send it back in and get it fixed under warranty. it sounds like your headphone jack has a loose connection. if you've had it for more than a year, then you're out of luck unless you bought applecare. You can also take it in to a certified apple repair center (Office Depot is one, and any Apple Retail Store will have a repair center) and they should be able to fix it for you for a fairly inexpensive price.

I would recommend taking it to your local apple store. They have a desk in their called the genius bar where they have apple experts that know how to check out anything apple. They can probably see if it's still covered under warranty or if you have an applecare warranty. They will look at it, play with it, check and make sure you have all the correct software and recommend what to do with it at no cost to you. I used it one time and it was great.

Yeah, it sounds like the head phone connector. Hope fully it's just the contacts. If it is, it should be too expensive.

get a quote from your closest Apple store (I assume it's no longer under warranty) and if you don't like the price there are more and more iPod repair places poppingup on-line. Give one of them a try
