You can actually build your own wet dry filter to be most cost effective. You can use a 10 gallon aquarium or a 5 gallon bucket as a reservoir depending on how much filtration you want. All you need as far as real expense is a Powerhead to blow the water from the bottom of the filter back into the tank.

Just anchor a tube inside the tank with a screen on the end and run the tube into the reservoir. Fill the reservoir with lava rocks or other filter substrate and let the gravity and suction draw from the tank to the reservoir then use the Powerhead to blow the water back up another tube into the tank.

This is a pretty base explanation, but design would take pages of description. If you want to do surface skimming, that is a whole other ball game. Its not so much the filter type but the type of filter substrate you use that will give you effective results.

Best rule of thumb with salt water is to not use much sand or fine gravel in the bottom of your tank. The less the better. It is in the gravel and sand that disease and filth sit stagnant and ruin your water.

Penn Plax Cascade 1200 Canister Filter
$99.99
$79.99
................on bigalsonline.com i used the 1000 series on my 55 and it was made for a 100+ gallon tank and it worked fine plus it comes with a spray bar so you dont need a buch of power heads maybe just one but you wont need the spray bar till you get your live rock!! its a great filter and easy to use. i would get your live rock soon though cuz your fish will have an easier time in your tank maybe some small pieces for now and build it slowly?

The EHEIM Professionel II 2028 type alternatives I've recommended you in your other question have 3 trays that can you can use. So you could use one tray for mech filtration and the other 2 for biological filtration.

I forgot to put down that you need the canister filter to have at least 1000~1200l/hr pump capacity.

In the long run the Ehime is the cheapest. You don't have to replace anything for months! We have one and all we do is rince out the white pads and put them back in. We do not put charcole filters in our filter system at all.

How much do you intend to spend on fish? Spend more on the filter!
