"Welcome to my crib." I know it's slang & all, but how did the term originate? Cribs are what babies sleep in.

Well, a crib is also where, for instance, Jesus was born. It is like a shelter for cattle and from cattle... to humans?!?!? It is very curious how some words adopt different uses.. I hope this helps:

lol yeah I know the word sounds so weird if you hear people say it. it just means that it's their home/hood (if you want to use more slang). I think that people find that "crib" makes them sound cooler but they hate being called a imaature child. At least thats what I think it is

Well, the term originated with very sub-standard housing for ladies who entertained guests privately as their profession. Then jazz musicians and other "hep" people used it from contact with and a certain level of respect for such ladies. And so it came into "cool" language, all the way from, at first, I think, San Francisco's Chinatown during the gold rush era. Anyway that's the earliest reference I remember.
