Having been a Labor and Delivery nurse for the last few years, I can honestly say I have only taken care of one patient that delivered her child in her minivan, on the way to the hospital. If this is your first child, you should be just fine. This particular patient was on her 3rd or 4th child. You should head to the hospital if your water breaks, your contractions are 5 minutes apart or if you start feeling lots of rectal pressure. Don't forget to call your doctor on the way. Good Luck and Congrats!

Don't worry, you'll be there on time! Labor can take a while, even AFTER your water breaks.
Just make sure you have someone there to time your contractions. Then, call the doctor when you think you're in labor and let him/her know how far apart your contractions are, how long they last, and how far away from the hospital you live. They can tell you when you should head to the delivery room.
Also keep in mind, that you might be ANYWHERE when you go into labor - even within the vicinity of the hospital, so you're worrying would be for nothing. ;-)
Good luck and congrats!

If I wouldn't have listened to my mom with my third, I wouldn't have. For some reason my labor was almost painless. I had been having TONS of braxton hicks since I was 5 months..so I really didn't think that I was even close to delivering. My mom made me go in and when they checked me I was at a 5.and the rest was very fast, but just no pain. I was getting ready to walk down to the nursery when they wanted to break my water..I was dialated at a 9 and wouldn't even have guessed! Fortunately my mom had made me go in, because if I would have went by the pain, I wouldn't have made it...and he might not be here or me either, as he had shoulder dystocia!
My mom barely made it to the hospital with me either..she started pushing almost the time she got there! She had hardly any pain either.
It can happen..if in doubt at all, go in and get checked out!

Not that this has been a personal experience, but when my mom had my younger sister (many years ago) we not only didn't make it to the hospital we barely made if out of our neighborhood. It was completely fine and my sister was born in a mini van, but if you leave as soon as real contractions hit you should definitely be able to make to a hospital that is 30 minutes away. I guess stories like my mother's are very rare.

Lol, I barely made it to the hospital with my second one. We lived about 30 min from the hospital also. By the time my husband took a shower, bathed our oldest son and then dropped him off at the babysitter, I was at the point of crossing my legs and trying not to push. When he got home I was standing in the door of our house using the door frame to hold myself up. hahaha He started giggling and told me that he almost stopped at the store to buy me flowers, I told him that if he had I would not have been here, because when he pulled up I was on my way to have the neighbor take me to the hospital. haha He drove at least 90 down the highway and actually passed 2 cops that were sitting in the median. They didn't budge. We finally made it to the hospital and my doctor was paged from her office. She ran the entire length of the hospital. Well, I had a total of 7 contractions from the time I got out of the car until the baby came out. It was close. hahaha I was worried on the way to the hospital though, I asked my husband how he felt about delivering his own child........he stepped on the gas more.
The amount of time a person is in labor depends on each person. But, usually the labor goes a little faster with each child. I had my first labor pain at about 7 a.m. with my first son and he was born at 2 p.m. that same day. My second son was even less time. I had my first pain at about 8 a.m. and he was born before 12p.m.

There are still plenty of OB/GYNs that are practicing. A shortage of OBs has nothing to do with not making it to the hospital on time. Sometimes babies come faster than expected. My mom's friend had one of her daughters outside the hospital on the gurney.

Nearly everyone makes it in time, i wouldn't worry. Especially if its your first baby, you will probab;y be in labour for hours! I laboured at home for 24 hours before i went the hospital, and laboured for another 12. So i wish it had been quicker!!
A friend of mine had 2 contractions and gave birth on the bathroom floor, but it is REALLY rare and almost NEVER happens that way. Both mum and bubs did great - daddy got to deliver her. Although they had to get new carpet lol!!!
Good luck to you!!!!

Here is a site with stories of unassisted births...It is not all too common especially with first time moms or people how live in residential areas unless they chose to have an unassisted birth!
http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/bstories.html#Unassisted
Average labor is like 15 hours...And I think most experience longer labor than that! Unless there is a major disaster you should be okay!

Rest east girly! Labor takes HOURS (unless you're extremely lucky)......30 minutes away is nothing to worry about. This almost happend to my friend though...but she stayed at home for a long time when she was having labor pains. She actually didn't go to the hospital until she fealt the need to push (which I don't recommend. lol).......You should have nothing to worry about!

lol-you watch too much tv-(J/K)-but your chances of not being on time to the hospital are less than 2%--I was worried as well. but the stats are like 85% of pregnant women arrive at the hosp too early and end up getting sent back home.
my hosp is 30 minutes away as well, that is if there is no traffic.
dont worry--Im sure you'll be there on time
