the skills required to perform mathematical operations by hand. What is your belief? and why?

No calculators aren't the answer. Once you are proficient at add, sub, multi, and dividing. Then sure it is ok but a grasps of the basics is still important.

If you don't use those skills to keep them sharp you loose them! Don't always rely on calculators, this is an age old story and sooo true. I asked the same question when I was in H.S. now 36yrs. old and believe me its true!
