If i get a rat from a pet store how do i choose male or female?

I might get another rat because the one i have now is dying and the advice from my other ? was to get another one. How do i choose from female or male?

I love both..just go and watch them for a while and pick out the one who has the best personality to you. As far as which is better- Females are more prone to tumors than males..they dont all get it, but when they do, you have to take them to the vet and have it removed, or have them put to sleep. Females are kinda fiesty and playful, males are a little more laid back.(but not always...I've had my share of lazy females and hyper males) I think you should just go and play with a few...and pick out which one you like based on his or her personality, not its sex.

First off, I think you should wait until the rat you have now is no longer living. If he/she is sick, you shouldn't bring in a new rat, or that one can get sick, too. If your rat is just old, then he/she won't want to deal with a hyper young rat.

Now, to choose between a male and a female.... Males pee on people more (usually), they have a stronger smell, they are more laid back and relaxed, and they get bigger than females. Female rats are generally more hyper and get into trouble more, they are more prone to getting tumors, and seem to be a little less affectionate than the males. Of course, there are probably a lot of exceptions. I think either sex makes a great pet, and you'll have fun with either. Is your rat now a male or a female? Would you like to stick with that same sex, or would you like to try something different?

I think most importantly, when you decide to get another rat, you should get two or three. Rats are very social animals (social with other rats, not just with humans) and need other rats to thrive. I didn't know this before, but when I had a rat who surprised us by giving birth to ten babies, I did a lot of research and learned that rats live longer, happier lives when they are put with other rats (of the same sex, of course- you don't want to mix males with females). Please consider getting more than one rat.

Personally, since all their personalities are different, I would ask if you can approach all the rats in the tank and see who comes to you, who nibbles, who bites, who runs, etc. Put your hands in the tank and wait a bit. Get as young as possible. I don't think you should limit yourself to a certain sex. You may find that perfect one if you have a wide selection.
At a glance, a more mature male will have a noticable scrotum under his tail.

Oh, I'm very sorry for your rat but let him rest in peace. I think you want to know the rat's personality. Males are more cuddley and calmer, they would happily sit in your pocket, while females, on the other hand are more affection and playful. Very hard to choose for me! if your wanting to no the difference, first off its pretty easy to tell
if u want to no wether to get a boy or a girl go for a girl boys are a lot messier

You can really tell the boys from the girls trust me.

If you didn't mean that way boys are usually more cuddly and lazy while girls like to explore and run around more.

I always thought that the boys have a stronger smell...a more pew odor. :-) I would get a girl.
