Excluding the mechanics (using the program itself):

I) Decide just what you need to tell your audience - and NO more.

II) Decide HOW - taking their age, knowledge, etc. into account.

III) Break down the message into roughly 12 parts - each part will be ONE PowerPoint Slide.

IV) Keep It Simple...give only details they NEED to know.

V) Keep the design (backgrounds/graphics) SIMPLE and relevant.

VI) Once you finish the presentation, practice giving it (at least 10-12 times, IMNSHO).

Keep the slides consistent:

Use a slide wizard for your background colors/style
Use the same font type throughout the presentation
Use the same font color throughout the presentation
Don't use a font smaller than 24 for your text or larger than 46 for your titles.

Don't put more than 6 words (not sentences) on a line and no more than 6 lines to a slide

Don't put a lot of slides in the presentation. Use one slide for each main point.

Use effects for bulleted items and transitions between slides. Use subtle effects or transitions. Don't use the slow moving effects or typewriter effects. Those are annoying.

Do not use more than 2 graphics per slide and use them only if they enhance or expand on what you are wanting to get across to your audience.

Firstly choose a good template. Make the presentation more visual then texty- if for school project this goes double. Some add short video clips as well.

Use plenty of pictures, graphs, whatever. Also include the animation for the text to make it more interesting and do not just write a huge chunk of text on one slide.
