Ask other actors. Do your research. Ask casting agents or industry bodies like MEAAA (Aust) or SAG(US) for lists of reputable agents. Most countries have bodies that govern the way agents do business - if the agent is not a member, then they are probably not good. Some children's agents do charge upfront fees but these are to cover the cost of photographs and promotion - something which adult actors are supposed to organize themselves. Most agents in Australia charge 10% for drama and 15% for TV commercials (plus GST) but this varies from country to country.

With no real offense meant to you, nor "them"; CHEAP and agent is an oxymoron.

First of all, in my opinion an agent is NOT in the business of furthering anyones career but their own,,, AND IF by chance you're a "newbie" you'd be better served waiting until you have name and game enough to actually NOT NEED one.

It's a hard knock life, this craft, and made more difficult at times by having to pay commissions for what ends up being peanut butter sandwiches as your end reward.

Certainly anyone truly passionate need only expend their own efforts to explore those passions. Believe this,,,When you NEED representation, they will FIND you.

It is true that an agent makes his money by getting his/her clients jobs and then they take a percentage of the actors final paycheck as their fee. The percentage is not much, really maybe about 10%, or less. My husband is a part time actor.

Agents are free. If they charge you, it's a scam. Agents make their money by getting you jobs and then taking a percentage of your pay.

there is no such thing as a cheap agency. good agents usually take about 10% from your earnings for 1 job.
