Oprah starting the school is a good thing particularly as most schools in South Africa meant to cater for those who still suffer under the burden of poverty are still providing the attendant pupils with inferior or non-existent education or those schools are being vandalized so as to make them useless. Education is one of the most important tools any human being can be equipped with. Anything that promotes a literate society should be lauded.

The common argument against the school is that the school is only open to black pupils and the resulting propaganda resulting from that fallacy. That is a misconception as the school is open to disadvantaged girls of all races. The “black girls only” spin put on the story is false.

The school is a good thing - education is always a good thing.

I like that its girls only - they are the disadvantaged in all societies in SA and I guess if she can put the money together and keep the teachers paid then why not Oprah?

That having been said, i do agree with Brad although he put it a little harshly, but there will be attempts to vandalize it and so she will have to be prepared to cough up for the maintenance also.

David - now that is powerful stuff, have you tried sending that to newspapers black and white and see if they will print it? Because you are right, as much as black folk have a right to be proud of their country so do white folk.

and the truth is we all call South Africa home!

I think it is absolutely fabulous. These girls wouldn't have had an education without her. If she could she would educate them all but it just isn't possible. These girls will have a future so bright and they have Oprah to thank for it. And no I am not biased or a bigot on colour seems how I am a white Canadian. Way to go Oprah. I hope this school is a huge success. According to television reports she is getting flack for it being all coloured children. Its her money and I believe she has a right to do with it as she wants. When she travelled to the villages to pick these girls I didn't see any white children. She picked these girls from impoverished villages and gave them a great start to life.I can't see why that is such a bad thing.

The school isnt open to "black girls only", it is open to girls who come from households with less than R4000 (£400) monthly income, and who has good grades and shows potential.
Basically it is a school for endeavour, and if there was a poor white girl with excellent marks, she'll also get in.
I think it is right to pick out the people who shows the most potential and make the most of their god given talents.

I don't have a problem with her or the school but why are all the pupils black?

If we boere open a whites only school it's racist!!!!!

Sorry but this is wrong!!!

I forgot, the whites don't have a say in south africa

It's a publicity stunt.

Oprah doesn't really care.

As for us whites not having a say in South Africa anymore.

You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.

You call me whiteboy, umlungu(= seafroth), Famma, Maboeroe, Lekoa, Whitey, Settler, White Trash and that's OK.

But when I call you ****ger, kaffer, piksteel, houtkop, muntu, or ****, you call me a racist.

You say that whites committed a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos, townships and Africa the most dangerous places to live?

You have bursaries for previously disadvantaged. You have Freedom Day. You have Youth Day. You have Thabo Mbeki. You have affirmative action. You have Black Economic Empowerment. You have Employment equity. You have BCM, PAC and Azapo. You have people singing “kill the Boer, the famma” .

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day you would call us racists. If we had white history month, we'd be racists. If we had an organization for only whites to "advance" our lives, we’d be racists or white supremacists. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships, you know we'd be racists. There are 100% Black colleges and universities in SA, yet if there were "Afrikaans universities" that would be a racist college.

In the Soweto March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

You rob us, murder us, rape us, hijack us and shoot at us. But when a white man shoots a black man, murderer or burglar posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.

I am proud to be white. But you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?

I guess it'll make her feel good.
The money would be better spent educating underprivileged American kids, as doubtless the school will be reduced to unmaintained rubble, like the rest of the country, in a very short time, at which point it'll be abandoned and eventually used as a squatter camp.

This is what happens when lunatics run an asylum.
