As an editor, I can tell you this. First of all, YOU don't find an illustrator for your work. The PUBLISHER does this and they don't take kindly to YOU doing it. Most publishers of this genre have a stable of illustrators they routinely use. As for a publisher, please be aware that this market is one of the most difficult to get into, and most publishers in this field NO LONGER accept unsolicited manuscripts, especially from novice writers. You really need an agent, and believe me, they are as selective about the clients they take on as the publishers are. Unless you really have a knack of writing for children (this is much more difficult than what it seems on the surface), you will not get far. Your best bet would be to let some children read what you have written. Trust me, they are harsh critics and they will tell you what they think. In addition, you need to join some workshops and perhaps take a children's writing class or two (or three). This is a VERY NARROW market with room for only a few of the BEST writers in this genre. Rejection is common in this field (even more so than in other areas of the publishing world). In addition, you had better know proper style, and what is hot today (and might be in the future) in the children's market. This is not for the faint of heart!

Your hear about the Big Read at www.neabigread.org Well, if you have done any illustration for one of the books to be used in that event, show up and show off your work...for example, illustrate something like the following and give it to the local organizers: Both daughters, Mayella and Scout, lost their mother so what if they swap fathers for a week? Both daughter characters lost Mom In Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" both the Scout character and Mayella character lost their Mom. Which one had any nurturing? Which one had a large wardrobe and servant to do housework? How would the Mayella character develop if Atticus was the father of that family? How would the Scout character develop if Bob Ewell was to swap positions for only 40 days, or even a week? What are your thoughts on this?
