I love having rats in general but i dont want to get another one after she dies because it would be really hard. If i do should i feel guilty and my mom and dad might not even let me. What should i do to convince them?

Firstly, I'm sorry to hear about your ratty friend. I think you should allow yourself time to grieve for your rat after he/she passes away, and maybe even have a small funeral? (I have pet rats too; one of my boy rats just died of a tumor.) If you would like to get a new rat after your pet has died, I don't think it should be a problem. It is important that you not blame yourself or others for your rat's medical problems, rats frequently do get tumors and rarely live longer than 2 or 3 years.

As far as your parents are concerned....
do you take care of your rat yourself, or does your mom/dad?
do you feed him/her and keep the cage cleaned out?
If you are the one who is mainly taking care of your rat, then your parents will be more likely to let you have a new pet. Parents seem to be less likely to replace pets if they are the ones who have to do all of the cleaning-up work for it.

Do you have an allowance that you could contribute towards getting a new rat? They are relatively inexpensive at pet stores, but I wouldn't get a new rat until your other friend has passed, there may be some incompatibility issues and they might fight.

Good luck!

You shouldn't feel guilty, sharing your love and a safe home with another rat will serve to honor your rats memory when it's gone. But I agree with the other poster who said to wait until this one passes, just to make sure nothing is comunicable. I would like to suggest maybe getting 2 rats! I kept a pair of males who were raised togther and they both stayed friendly and tame. You can't be around all the time, and another friend to pass the time I feel gives them a better quality of life.

P.S. to the rat haters: Rats rock too!

i had a guinea pig and when she died of a tumor i cried a lot and my parents told me they wouldn't let me to get another one.i didn't listen and started 2 search 4 another guinea pig but i soon discovered that i couldn't find one that was as beautiful and as sweet as my former pet so i gave up.after a while my parents suggested 2 get a pet but a different one cause i won't be able 2 find one the same as my last.so i bought a cat.try getting another pet not a rat again.you'll feel better and u won't compare this pet with the other.and besides your parents might agree 2 get a cat,a guinea pig, a bird or even a dog!good luck and sorry for your loss.

maximum of my rats had tumors. i found that appearing surgical operation on them to get rid of the tumors became in basic terms too frustrating on them. I did do it for 2 of my boys, although the ended up arising more effective tumors some months later and their lungs were finished of tumors, besides. good success.

It's quite common for people to rush right out and search for a companion that resembles their lost loved one. This is okay, but one thing you need to know is that no other rat will replace your current one. You need to be loving to all animals, and understand that each one has it's own personality. I would say that it would be okay to get one, but I would wait until your current one is gone, and you have thoroughly cleaned out his cage, replaced everything in it, and sanitized it well. Many forms of cancer can be contagious given the source to other rats.

Try for a similar but different pet. Go for a hamster or guniuea pig. If you were really responsible and took good care of your rat then use that to help convince your parents.

maybe try animals that live longer (dogs, cats, fish)
cus rats lifespan is not very long, yet the pain of losing them is great

Um...a rat? I don't really like them, so I'd say get a dog or a cat or something normal.

Sorry that's kinda harsh...but you asked for my opinion I guess...
