I bought a used car in June 2006 and the insurance expired at the end of December. I didnt know it b/c i didnt get any notification about it. I didnt use the car ever since b/c i went on vacation for winter break. When I came back 3 days i found the car was flooded and I towed it to a mechanic and sold it to him for $200. I returned the plate to DMV today but i forgot to ask about the insurance. I mean, will it affect me the next time i buy a car or will my license got suspended because of the lapse? What should I do?

Thanks a lot!

No, your license will not be suspended. You should have proof of your current insurance to take with you to the DMV when you get the plates for your next car, though.

At least in Maryland, it's a law that you need to have insurance. However, the DMV does not check up on this...it only comes into play in the event that you get into an accident. If you didn't have any accidents (i.e. with another person or another person's property) then I'd guess that the DMV doesn't even know.

And if your liscense hasn't been suspended yet, it probably won't be. If they were going to suspend it they would have notified you before your insurance lapsed.

There is no way that you should ever be affected from this. I doubt seriously the DMV will look to see when the insurance was cancelled. You returned the plate to them, they assume that you have already cancelled your insurance, as since you sold the car. One does not usually keep paying for insurance on a car they have sold.

You might have to pay a higher price for the first 6 months of insurance, but you will not have any fines. In MI. they ask you if you have been insured for the entire 6 months before coming in for an insurance quote.

That happened to a friend of mine here in GA. His license was suspended until he could pay for at least 6 months worth of insurance. I think the laws on this vary by state.

It won't have no effect the next time you buy a car and being that you gave up the tag you won't have your liscense suspended. The only thing that might happen is that the insurance company you had the policy thru might turn you down for another policy.
