Well, the most important thing is:
NO child, especially the shy ones should be made fun of by their classmates. This is the most important thing. Once someone is comfortable that if they are wrong it won't matter. So, you need to make sure that the class never laughs at a student when they get something wrong.
Once this rule is fully in place and practiced, then call on your shy student when you are fairly sure they have the right answer. When they give the correct answer, be sure to verbally acknowledge that they were right and do it in front of their peers. This will slowly build confidence....
Actually, there are studies that indicate that being wrong in front of girls is much more embarrassing for boys. Boys don't so much care being wrong in front of other boys, but really hate to be wrong in front of girls. One principal that I am aware of in our state, has segregated the classes, so all boys are together and all girls are in other classes together.....Guess what, the boys grades are better and they participate more!
You might want to research this information and see if you can get your principal to implement this in your school on a trial basis...

Try not to call on them until they ARE comfortable...I would always feel like a spotlight was on me when that happened..
The good teachers I had would find out something about me, like an English teacher I had who also read sci-fi and would talk about it with me...she learned that because I was all over Fahrenheit 451. Or if your student shows a marked interest in say, the arachnids and other critters you're talking about, let them do something special with it, like hold a African black millipede or a Emperor scorpion. More than likely, the kid is convinced nobody likes them, and that you're just a teacher doing your job, but if you can find a way to make them feel special they might open up for you.

I was shy and it would always help to meet people when i would sit by the teacher or by a friend. If by the teacher the teacher could talk to them about anything like their shirt for example

Include the student without making them standout. Don't push them but make them aware that you are aware of the presence. Don't ever put the spotlight on them - these will make them retreat.
Praise them without going overboard, and above all - patience!!!!
And some time with that student away from the class always helps, as it does with any student.
